Several years ago Namas ir aš published reportage about a wonderful summer house on an island at the Latvian coast near the town of Kaltene – a work of the famous Latvian architect Zaiga Gaile. This project has been widely acclaimed and received many awards. Then, next to the laconic shape of the villa armoured with aged metal, a strange volume shining with metal appeared near the yacht jetty on the sand. Now the architect’s family enjoys the pleasures of a fantastic bathhouse Nautilus.
Its shape looks like a tower of a submarine submerged under the sand. Its surface is coated with stainless steel sheets. This sculptural silhouette is an expression of a traditional Latvian bathhouse. Already when she started designing a summer house instead of a former water pumping plant, the architect knew she would built a bathhouse right at the water.
The shape of the bathhouse contrasts with the main building and masks a two-storey structure. Its ground floor is where the owners keep their beech equipment, and the sauna as well as a loggia with a heated swimming pool is housed on the first floor. A platform to enjoy marine views is situated on the top.
Contemporary aesthetics reveal the architect’s style inside. Minimalist design shining with metal surfaces is warmed by timber details. The summerhouse interior is repeated here by round windows, finishing materials, textures and details. This creates continuity between these contrasting structures.
From the sea, the bathhouse looks like a welcome highlight on the coast, thus becoming the final element of the Easter Island, as the summerhouse is called, and thus revealing the beauty of the coast. |
