In 2009, one of the most celebrated events in Lithuanian public life was the opening of the National Gallery of Art (NDG) in Vilnius. Its reconstruction pioneered the renaissance of museums in Lithuania. During its first exhibitions, audiences consumed art with such enthusiasm that the traffic of viewers was intense on weekends. The visitors explore the atmosphere and spaces of the building no less than the exhibits.
The building designed by Lithuanian architects Gediminas Baravykas and Vytautas Vielius in 1966 housed the Museum of Revolution from 1980. A venue of the Lithuanian Art Museum, the National Gallery of Art, was opened in 1993. While preparing the new exhibition of the twentieth and twenty first century Lithuanian art, the gallery was closed for reconstruction. In 2005 – 2009, the building was expanded according to the project of Audriaus Bučas, Darius Čaplinskas and Gintaras Kuginis. The architects have preserved the existing tectonics of the gallery and added new structures as the architectural signs of today. Perfect conditions for exhibiting and preserving national and international art have been created in the gallery with a contemporary look: 10 spaces have been adapted to exhibit the collections of the Lithuanian Art Museum that boasts over 46 000 exhibits. The administration was moved to two new buildings, and after having redesigned the existing approaches, architects created a large space for temporary exhibitions as well as depositories for collections. The entire building has been equipped with modern climate control, lighting and security systems. The especially designed educational centre will offer educational programmes, guided tours around the exhibition and hands-on art experiences.
