The Rumene Duke manor was first mentioned in Latvian written sources in 1453. The present brick manor was built in 1876 by the Disterloe family. Brothers Dauguli moved here after World War I. A primary school was opened in the manor after World War II, then it was a collective farm property, and from 1990, the manor stood empty. In 2004, it was bought by Dana Beldiman and Justs Karlsons and reconstructed by Zaiga Gaile, one of the most prominent Latvian architects. She always considers the historical, architectural and natural context and interprets cultural heritage in a contemporary manner. She does not try to imitate history. For her, the manor symbolised faded memories; thus, she imagined democratic, merging spaces filled with natural light. She wanted to clear the manor from 19th century eclecticism and darkness. The manor was too small for its new owners; thus the architects found a courageous solution: they built one more floor and dug a huge cellar. Thus the one-storey neo-gothic manor turned into a three-storey manor with a cellar. They also destroyed an extension that had never been finished and designed a tectonically correct structure connected to the manor by a glass gallery. The owners have decided to open an exceptional hotel here with a personal lackey serving the guests. The ground floor was designed as a huge common space. Luxurious apartments are situated on the first floor and in the loft. Contemporary technologies have been disguised behind wooden doors or beams. Although the manor had been derelict, some authentic interior elements have survived: window frames, inner shutters, doors, parquet floor and wooden stairs as well as fragments of wall painting. The architect has achieved a synthesis of classical and ultra modern solutions in this manor.
