Swimming in Sand 1-2 (113)

Several years ago Namas ir aš published reportage about a wonderful summer house on an island at the Latvian coast near the town of Kaltene – a work of the famous Latvian architect Zaiga Gaile. This project has been widely acclaimed and received many awards. Then, next to the laconic shape of the villa armoured with aged metal, a strange volume shining with metal appeared near the yacht jetty on the sand. Now the architect’s family enjoys the pleasures of a fantastic bathhouse Nautilus. Its shape looks like a tower of a submarine submerged under the sand. Its surface is coated with stainless steel sheets. This sculptural silhouette is an expression of a traditional Latvian bathhouse. Already when she started designing a summer house instead of a former water pumping plant, the architect knew she would built a bathhouse right at the water.
