A TALE OF 65 ROOMS
Nr. 115 (4-5)
Milan has been unanimously named the capital of design and fashion, but the city itself is criticised for being expensive, grey and unattractive. Yet there is some interesting building activity going on here, for example, the luxurious Maison Moschino hotel.

UNCHANGED
Nr. 3 (114)
The Rumene Duke manor was first mentioned in Latvian written sources in 1453. The present brick manor was built in 1876 by the Disterloe family. Brothers Dauguli moved here after World War I. A primary school was opened in the manor after World War II, then it was a collective farm property, and from 1990, the manor stood empty. In 2004, it was bought by Dana Beldiman and Justs Karlsons and reconstructed by Zaiga Gaile, one of the most prominent Latvian architects.

The 2006 VitraHaus Project was entrusted to Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron.

Swimming in Sand
1-2 (113)
Several years ago Namas ir aš published reportage about a wonderful summer house on an island at the Latvian coast near the town of Kaltene – a work of the famous Latvian architect Zaiga Gaile. This project has been widely acclaimed and received many awards. Then, next to the laconic shape of the villa armoured with aged metal, a strange volume shining with metal appeared near the yacht jetty on the sand. Now the architect’s family enjoys the pleasures of a fantastic bathhouse Nautilus. Its shape looks like a tower of a submarine submerged under the sand. Its surface is coated with stainless steel sheets. This sculptural silhouette is an expression of a traditional Latvian bathhouse. Already when she started designing a summer house instead of a former water pumping plant, the architect knew she would built a bathhouse right at the water.

CODE - NDG

In 2009, one of the most celebrated events in Lithuanian public life was the opening of the National Gallery of Art (NDG) in Vilnius. Its reconstruction pioneered the renaissance of museums in Lithuania. During its first exhibitions, audiences consumed art with such enthusiasm that the traffic of viewers was intense on weekends. The visitors explore the atmosphere and spaces of the building no less than the exhibits.
