Designer Karim Rashid was born in Egypt, grew up in England, studied in Canada and now is a proper citizen of the world, one of the most revered and productive creators. He creates industrial and graphic design, interiors, furniture, shoes, clothes, watches, household appliances and accessories. This year, at the international furniture exhibition in Milan, the company DuPont Corian presented his most recent futurist project from synthetic stone, Smart-ologic Corian Living. This is a conceptual interior whose purpose is to show the multifaceted nature of design, the universal quality and the range of possible uses of this promising synthetic material, corian. Karim Rashid has designed all necessary spaces of a traditional home, but for a contemporary life-style. The physical qualities of corian have become ideal clay for this designer to mould his own world. It is particularly durable, tough, plastic, poreless and thus not absorbing any liquids; as such, it gives complete freedom to designers to create a homogeneous interior. The latter can have many faces: corian can be completely opaque or subtly transparent. It is a very rational material, which will become even more environmentally friendly in the future. Already today, corian includes recycled bio-components.
In the futurist spaces of this interior, one can recognise the forms characteristic to Karim Rashid. There is neither a single straight angle nor a drop of black colour here. The designer describes his style as a sensual minimalism, for which feelings, human sensations and sexuality are important. The organically merging spaces, the shapes of furniture growing from the walls and the floor are pleasant to the eye and to the body. All this structure, seemingly soft and mysterious, has captured a strong charge of energy, the power of which is difficult to resist. |
