SOLID AND UNDIVIDED Nr. 3 (107), 2009

When clients have a vision of the life they want to live and entrust its physical realisation to the architect without any preconceptions, the relationship results in productive solutions. Jūratė Raguckienė’s project for a detached house in Santariškės district, Vilnius, falls into this category. The architect, having envisioned the plans of future neighbours, placed the house in the plot so that the neighbours’ walls and windows would not restrict the actions of people living here. Later, a block of flats was built nearby, but it is practically invisible because all living spaces and windows of this house open to the courtyard, and the utilities zone is situated at the entrance.

In her designs, Raguckienė seeks simplicity and compositions that do not disturb or stop the gaze. She looks for elegance which would not be boring or pretentious, also for warmth and comfort. She remains faithful to clear spaces, strict forms, harmonious material solutions and high quality things.

When designing the plan structure, the architect had to consider the life of the large family. Thus, the common living area does not disturb neighbouring zones. Although the kitchen is hardly visible from the living room, one does not feel isolated when being there and can observe the others. The refrigerator, the oven and cupboards have been integrated into the inner wall; thus, the kitchen is more characterised by a monumental worktop island. Lighting is also carefully measured. Lamps seem to disappear in the space and become passive participants of the game. The architect first focuses on general lighting and only then moves onto the subtleties of the local lighting because she does not like insufficient light, which reduces the space. This interior is beautiful not only thanks to its pure forms, but also thanks to the precision of details.
